Gaming managers are vitally important in the overall running of a casino. They usually supervise a range of different gaming operations for specific casino areas. They are responsible for the hiring and training of other employees within the casino to ensure that they can properly manage their tables, which is very important for dealers and croupiers. Additionally, they focus strongly on surveillance and security, ensuring that there are no anomalies. Furthermore, they are customer service agents, dealing with guests to ensure they have the most enjoyable time possible.

In larger casinos, a gaming manager usually deals with just one area of the overall floor. Here, they make sure that all games are executed properly and consistently. This means they ensure all employees are properly trained and that any disputes and problems are resolved. Furthermore, they determine how issues can be escalated without causing difficulties to other players.

Typically, they are in constant communication with surveillance and security personnel through different communication devices. This ensures that they can address any discrepancies in a professional and quiet manner. They play a very visible role and are called upon to resolve any arising situation while conforming to the rules and regulations of the establishment.

Other job duties of a gaming manager include:

How to Become

A gaming manager has to have some education, but mainly practical experience in supervising and management. Often, gaming managers started their careers as line supervisors, croupiers, or dealers in a casino. An associate’s degree in management is usually preferred. Additionally, gaming managers have to pass background checks and must be willing to work shifts.

Education Requirements

An associate’s degree is usually the minimum requirement, although this does vary depending on the casino. Some require as little as a high school diploma or GED, whereas others require a bachelor’s degree at least. Relevant degree subjects include accounting, hospitality, and hotel management.

A gaming manager usually also has to be licensed by the state, which is usually through the gaming commission or the state casino control board. The exact licensing requirements vary depending on the role the gaming manager takes on, the state in which they work, and the casino itself. A background check and drug test has to be passed in order for someone to become licensed. They must also be of an acceptable age, which varies depending on the state.

The most important thing is work experience. Most gaming managers have worked in casinos for many years prior. Many also have experience in customer service and in marketing. Usually, they start their career as a gaming or slot supervisor and get promoted to the position of gaming manager. Others come from other resort departments and are moved into the casino.
