Job Duties

Healthcare managers ensure that the clinic or healthcare setting they work for is able to meet its goals within their budget. This includes focusing on the goals of the practitioners within the facility, but equally those of the community that they serve. A healthcare manager does so by creating plans and making business decisions that focus on reaching those goals. They work with other leaders within the medical staff, focusing on their various daily responsibilities such as medical equipment, department budgets, and supply needs. They also ensure that overall operations can be managed properly. Furthermore, they develop close working relations with other medical staff, including clinicians, physicians, and nurses.

The role of a healthcare manager is also to run the daily operations of the facility itself. This means they manage medical staff, the billing department, non-medical employees, and more. They monitor staff expectations, set budgeting decisions, and hold regular performance evaluations. They act as a spokesperson and liaison between the media and the healthcare facility. They ensure press releases are delivered properly and that press conferences are held appropriately. They also ensure any important events and news are shared across the community, for which they may have to answer questions and find expert opinions as well.

Other job duties of a healthcare manager are:

  • To develop, administer, implement, and monitor services and programs within their healthcare facility or business
  • To ensure reimbursement policies are properly implemented according to medical standards and regulations
  • To maintain patient databases and information systems, focusing on their accuracy and ensuring that only authorized personnel can access them
  • To coordinate daily business operations and formulate new strategic business plans
  • To conduct and direct recruitment, retention, and training of other staff members
